After being involved in multiple weddings, I have noticed how stressful wedding planning can be for the bride-to-be. The results of my recent survey clearly indicate the planning is overwhelming, stressful, expensive and time consuming. Over 60% of those surveyed planned their own wedding without the help of a professional.
Searching for inspiration, ideas and decorations as well as local resources and services is often difficult and time consuming, especially for those living in smaller towns in rural BC. Unfortunately, information about local businesses that offer services and supplies for weddings is often communicated by word of mouth only.
My goal is to support the bride-to-be with planning their own wedding to make it a more enjoyable and less stressful experience. Developing an app that keeps track of every little detail, provides the connection to all businesses and local services, venues and supplies would assist immensely in the planning process. The app must be simple and well organized so users can take full advantage of everything the app has to offer. The app should be customizable so it can be tailored to specific needs.
Wedding planning does not have to be overwhelming or stressful. With the proper tools to find vendors and services available near you, the process can be simplified, organized and even enjoyable for everyone involved.
- Create an app that assists with event planning by providing inspiration and ideas.
- Resource to connect the user with local vendors and services.
- Create a community of wedding vendors and service providers to advertise their services and easily connect with customers.
- Provide an app to easily track of budget, bookings, appointments, guest list, and RSVPs.
- Provide a simple way for the bridal party to keep informed and organized and communicate with everyone involved.
- Provide an online site for wedding guests to RSVP and get information or directions as well as link to gift registeries.
- Provide users the ability to to buy or sell used wedding items within the We Do community.
The We Do app would be used by anyone of any age who is planning a wedding or special events. For this project, I will limit the geographical scope of the app to focus on the Prince George area. Prince George is a city of approximately 80,000 people but also services many smaller outlying communities.
With the use of my app, I would like users to feel organized and confident while planning the wedding of their dreams. The app would allow them to become part of a knowledgeable community with easy access to inspiration, ideas, resources and services within their community. The app would assist in every part of the planning process, from searching for inspiration to communicating with vendors, booking services, finalizing the guest list and providing information to everyone involved.
The app would allow local businesses to advertise their services and directly target their desired audience. Vendors would benefit from increased exposure within their own communities and would soon seek We Do certification to ensure their success.
The main component of my project is the app, but my additional deliverables is what makes the app effective. We Do is an online community that connects businesses, suppliers, service providers and wedding planners. The project also features online and magazine advertisements and provides “We Do certification” to approved businesses. The We Do certification is a stamp of approval and ensures wedding planners successful interaction with that business. The We Do certification would be advertised on business cards and a window sign, as well as online advertisements. The app would provide wedding guests a place to RSVP, get directions to the event and ideas for wedding gifts.
The app must be simplified and well organized so it is easy for users to understand and use to their full advantage. The app will be customizable for each user so it is tailored for their specific needs.
From the home page the user is able to easily see the status of their checklist, vendors, bridal party and guest list, as well as quickly link to those pages. Notifications are located below and can be clicked on to bring the user to the corresponding page.
After initial registration, a full tutorial of the app is offered. The user can simply skip the tutorial, but will be able to access Help at any time from the menu which will open an overlay on the current page to explain everything they need to know.
The user is able to choose from which category of vendor they are specifically looking for, and from there they can choose their location and kilometer range. There are also options to narrow the search specific to the type of vendor. In this case for reception venues, the user is able to filter by capacity and price range.
On the venue page, the user is a touch away from connecting with the vendor via email or telephone, viewing their location on a map and reading reviews. Scrolling further down, the user could read the vendor’s personal write up with additional details. At this point, the user can add any vendor to their favourites by simply clicking the heart icon.
On the My Vendors page, the user can switch between their favourited and booked vendors. From there they can easily contact the vendor or share the vendor.
The budget page allows you to set the desired budget, prepare an estimate based on wants vs needs and finally tracks actual expenses. The user is able to enter each expenditure, as well as edit estimated costs. In order to simplify the overall budget, the user would have the ability to categorize each expense based on a budget for each aspect.
The Inspiration page features three tabs: Tips and Ideas shows articles created by the We Do team that shows a range of related information. The user can search for any keyword to find related articles. The We Do Weddings tab shows photos from actual weddings from other We Do users, and the Favourites tab shows saved articles or weddings.
To assist with the expense of such an event, the app would also offer the means to buy or sell used items such as dresses and decorations. Users are able to browse for items for sale from other We Do community members or post their own items after their own wedding.
The Checklist is an important part of the app. A time line is created based upon the date of registry and the date of the wedding to set an idea of tasks to be accomplished in order to stay organized and prepared. When a section is clicked, a list of tasks drops down. When the user clicks on an individual task, drop down information appears giving them a brief description as well as additional buttons to more tips and tricks related to that task, and will link to realted pages within the app. The user may also delete the task from this view if it is not required for their wedding planning.
In the Guests view, the user can easily view the guest list by all, groups, or by tables. Within these tabs, the user can filter guests by attending, not attending, or pending. The user is also able to easily manually add a new guest or import from contacts.
The guest website is editable within the app and is broken into 6 sections; a customizable description, wedding date, location information, registry, photo gallery and contact information. The user is also able to select the theme of their guest website from a pre made templates within the app.
The We Do app is also used as a tool to communicate with the entire bridal party. The first screen is from the bride or groom log in. Here they are able to click between the messages tab where they can have conversations with any or all of the bridal party members, or the edit tab where they can edit each person. The user is able to choose if each member of the bridal party has access to the Checklist, My Vendors, Calendar and Inspiration. This changes the menu view for each bridal party member (third screen).
Bridal party members log in with a password from the bride or groom so they are added to the correct wedding party account. From there they create their own account which allows them to recieve notifications on their phone regarding messages and important dates.
The app will assist the user in creating a website for guests to look up information about the wedding and RSVP quickly and easily. Having information available on the website decreases the amount of times the bride or groom will be contacted for basic information. When guests RSVP on the website it is automatically updated in the app guest list so that the guest list is always up to date. The guests are able to enter number attending, personal messages and song requests. Once the RSVP has been entered, the bride and groom will receive a notification. All information on this site can be edited at any time by the user. To protect the privacy of guests, the guests would not be privy to information entered by other guests nor names on the entire guest list.
WE DO VENDORS
Any wedding related legitimate business can apply to be a part of the We Do community. This partnership with businesses would create a place to share and support each other, and advertise their own products or services. Wedding planners, or bride or grooms to be will be able to easily find and contact these businesses. Each business will have a certified vendor window sticker and business cards to indicate their involvement with We Do. We Do certified vendors would be able to offer immediate in store registration on the We Do site. If desired, the customer could immediately favourite that vendor, thereby improving their public exposure. Certified Vendors must provide all required contact information as well as have a business location where they are able to post the certified vendor sign.
I worked on this project from September-December 2016 for a school project in my final year of my degree. I had so much fun researching and designing this project. I’m hoping that maybe one day in the future I can take this concept a step further and make it a reality.
